Ways to Boost Christmas Sales Using Print

Marketing and Promoting your business for Christmas

New Zealanders, like the rest of the world, seem to love shopping around Christmas. Retail sales are at their best around the holiday season and small business owners compete with large retailers in decorating their stores to compete for holiday shopping boosts.

If you have a brick-and-mortar store, you have a leg-up on online retailers as you can decorate your store with things like signage, packaging, store decals, and more.

Often the earliest sign that Christmas is fast approaching, retailers and shopping centres decorate their environment with things like Christmas trees, baubles, and signage. This year, you might be keen to decorate your store yourself.

Ways to boost sales for your business at Christmas

Whenever your store has a sale, it’s a good idea to try and catch foot traffic using signage. Christmas is a competitive time for storefronts, but the right signage can capture the attention of passers-by and get them in your doors.

The main types of signage for retailers at Christmas include:

On top of that, you can add some decorations to your store, like mini Santas and fake presents (wrapped empty boxes).

Brochures and flyers

But, what if your business isn’t likely to catch foot traffic? Well, it’s time to generate some buzz about your business using promotional materials that can bring your customers to you.

Brochures and flyers are a great way to reach customers as an alternative to email, particularly during Christmas. Your catalogues can be used to:

  • Display the products and services you're offering (and prices)

  • The discounts you're offering to consumers

  • Offer freebies or prizes to customers who shop with you over competitors

For extra points, design your catalogue to be specific to Christmas. Use pictures relevant to the season of Santa, gifts, happy customers, and Christmas trees. And though it doesn’t exactly snow in New Zealand during Christmas, it might be a bit of fun to include some snow anyway.

Seasonal packaging and benefits

Product packaging can influence consumers, and wrapping presents is often everyones’ least favourite job in the gift-giving season. By seasonally packaging your products, you’re adding more value to your consumers' Christmas shopping experience. Some ways to package your products seasonally include:

  • Including a Christmas note or thank you card

  • Adding Christmas package filling like fake snow or straw

  • Offer gift-wrapping services or shelve products pre-wrapped

  • Add personalised Christmas stickers to your products

Gifts and freebies

Adding value to your products could be that final selling point that sways your consumers to pick your products over nearby competitors. It’s unlikely that you’re going to be the only retailer offering seasonal promotions and discounts for Christmas, so freebies and gifts are a great way to give you the step up.

Some ideas for freebies and benefits to add to your Christmas shoppers include:

  • Gift cards

  • Coupons

  • Personalised stickers

  • Personalised calendars

  • Merchandise like hats or shirts

  • Mugs and water bottles

  • Personalised Christmas ornaments
